extremely old, nigh-immortal remnants/survivors of a precursor civilization

their ancient precursor tech is still around & often functional, they just haven't turned it on in two thousand years and don't feel like digging through their garage to find the instruction manual

their precursor tech toaster and coffee machine, otoh, are well maintained and still used daily


they maintain scattered little one-person outposts (rarely, two people), usually built into some piece of infrastructure designed to have a live-in caretaker — repeater stations, weather grid towers, storage nodes, listening posts, meteor deflectors…

mostly they're things that only have value as part of a larger network, or for purposes no current culture is interested in.

when remnants are useful to nearby communities, it tends to be because of some doodad they happened to have on them
