Moving instances? Not finding an instance you like? Why not start your own! No server experience needed (but community management experience helps!)

I highly recommend masto.host!

The folks behind Masto Host have kept ✨plush✨ city and many other instances up to date and running smoothly for years now, with very little downtime- and at a very reasonable cost, leaving you with more time to help meet the social needs of your community. :blobsmilehappyeyes:

@mawr Nice!

Is it possible to run Glitch and the like through them, or can you only do plain Mastodon?

[Not that we want our own instance, just curious.]

@IceWolf That's the one downside- they only host vanilla Mastodon, but on the plus side: it's always the latest version. :blobsmilehappy:

@mawr Rrf.

Because plain Mastodon is a /scourge upon the earth/, frankly, with just dropping any message formatting. >,,>

@IceWolf @mawr >.>

I kinda like the lack of formatting tbh

Mastodon/rich text

@Canageek @mawr It wouldn't be a bad thing, if it gave you any indication the formatting ever existed at /all/!

But like, when people do actions with *s and it gets converted to italics and then Mastodon /silently drops it/ and I have to guess from context...

And then there's blockquotes.
Stripping out blockquotes leaves /no indication/ whatsoever that those words aren't the poster's own!

Mastodon/rich text

@IceWolf @mawr That sound bad, but it might be how the other instance transmits it?

I would do it with codes in the field like an RTF file

Mastodon/rich text

@Canageek @mawr Yeah, it transmits it fine. It's all HTML.

And then meow just silently strips all that out.

Mastodon/rich text

@Canageek @mawr (I believe the spec says HTML too, and even vanilla Mastodon /transmits/ it as HTML, it's just HTML that doesn't have formatting in it because it doesn't let you put in formatting.)

@mawr Seconding this- I started an instance with Masto Host - they are *much* cheaper than anything else you'll find including self hosted on a cloud service.

The rPi 4 can only host a pleroma space, and is really unstable with masto so unless you have an old computer lying around and DDNS setup and a stable internet connection...
