Today @kelseyhusky and a housemate and I finished building the shed in our back yard and it feels so incredibly good to finally have finished that project!! :blobcheer:

Also, like. This morning? That was a pile of sheet metal thinggies under a tarp, and now it's got an _inside_!

I can't explain how liminal that is!

Last night I put some off-grid lighting in our new shed! :blobsmilehappy:

I found some USB LED light strips that worked really nicely and ran them through a USB hub to a USB power switch (!!!) and plugged that all into a battery pack. :blobsmilehappyeyes:

I was really surprised by how bright it was!! And by my estimations, that 12000 mAh battery should keep the lights on in there for at least ~4-5 hours on a charge- perfect for any project I might need to do in there. :blobsmilehappyeyes:

@mawr are you going to stick some solar pannels ontop so you can charge the the battery without taking inside to plug in?

re: Last night I put some off-grid lighting in our new shed! :blobsmilehappy:

@Maddyflen I would, but almost all of the sunlight reaching our property is currently being used to pull carbon out of the atmosphere (we have a _LOT_ of trees), so solar wouldn't be very effective. The other problem is the temperature; I'd need to use a battery rated for freezing temps to leave it out there full time.

I plan to keep battery packs inside and charged, and only bring 'em out when I need them. ^^

@mawr Maybe a PV panel to charge it, either fully or in assistance? Could be quite an enjoyable sub-project in its own right. ^_^

re: Last night I put some off-grid lighting in our new shed! :blobsmilehappy:

@porsupah I would, if we didn't have so many trees on our property eating up all the sunlight! :blob_grinning_sweat:

re: Last night I put some off-grid lighting in our new shed! :blobsmilehappy:

@mawr Oh, well, I suppose they were there first. ^_^

re: Last night I put some off-grid lighting in our new shed! :blobsmilehappy:

@porsupah Yeah! And they're arguably doing the more important work of pulling carbon out of the atmosphere. And they're important friends to me, too. I'd rather rebuild the house than cut down the trees that surround it.

@mawr

Nice! And yeah, LEDs have really changed a lot of things. Amazing how little power they use!

re: Last night I put some off-grid lighting in our new shed! :blobsmilehappy:

@zetasyanthis It really is!! The next time I go camping is gonna be LIT and I mean that in all possible ways :blob_aww:

re: Last night I put some off-grid lighting in our new shed! :blobsmilehappy:

@mawr If you want suggestions on solar panels what output USB and camping-grade to flesh that system out, or perhaps some DIY ideas to make a a more-skookum battery pack as an upgrade, you lemme know, yeah? 💙

re: Last night I put some off-grid lighting in our new shed! :blobsmilehappy:

@LexYeen What would you recommend for a full time battery for out there? I might play some with Solar but there's so much shade there that grass has trouble growing. I doubt it'd be worth the effort. :blob_grinning_sweat:

battery suggestions w/ Amazon links re: shed lighting

@mawr Anything marketed as a "portable power station" in the USD100-250 range ought to work a treat, and as a bonus most of them also provide 12vdc and light-duty AC power.

Cheapest I'd feel comfortable risking money on: amazon.com/dp/B076PR4TBZ/

Cheapest recognizable brand name I'd be comfortable with, since I own one of their power banks and like it: amazon.com/dp/B07FYJVFNK/

Off-brand I'd be comfortable with, currently on deep discount because Black Friday consumerism: amazon.com/dp/B07SD4KMMN/

As a bonus, something like this is also most egregiously useful during a power-outage emergency.
